Let the events at Sınırüstü Nursing Home not happen again

We, the Sınırüstü Nursing Home Monitoring Initiative – formed of the Alzheimer’s Association, Universal Patient’s Rights Association, Cyprus Turkish Bar Association, Cyprus Turkish Pharmacists’ Association and Association of Elderly Rights and Mental Health – have come together to monitor and report the health and rights of the elderly and patients who receive care in common living spaces (elderly care homes, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, etc.) in our country. Our common vision is that the elderly and patients in our country receive care in accordance with human rights and standards, and that their dignity is protected.

Are as the Sınırüstü Monitoring Committee, we are asking!

Has it been investigated how and why the Sınırüstü Nursing Home fell into this situation? Has an investigation been launched regarding those responsible and at what stage? What is the current situation of the patients and the elderly who were evacuated from the Sınırüstü Nursing Home by the order of the Prime Ministry? Is their treatment continuing? Were there any people who neglected and abused the elderly and the sick? What measures were taken to prevent such incidents from happening again? What is the situation in other nursing homes? Are they audited? What does the state plan to do to improve and control them? After the trauma, has there been any development that will eliminate the worries and fears of our elderly people about their future? During Respect for the Elderly Week, can our state guarantee that our elderly people will not be abused or neglected in nursing homes?

As the Sınırüstü Monitoring Committee, we demand!

A community that ignores the neglect of the vulnerable, poor, elderly, and disabled, no matter how much it develops economically, is condemned to fail in terms of human rights.

We want to emphasize, once again, the terrible events that took place in the ‘Yaşam Sitesi’ facility, which was managed by the Sınırüstü People’s Foundation. For this reason, we declare that we wish to be included in the new formation of the Foundation.

The rights of older people should be protected by law

Our elderly people should receive quality and safe care services befitting their human dignity, and it is the state’s responsibility to provide this. Social planning specific to the elderly should be made and their rights should be protected by laws.

We want the nursing home law to be drafted and enacted as soon as possible. Standards in nursing homes should be determined and inspected, and penal practices should be put into effect for those who do not comply with the standards.

We remind the state of its legislative, executive, and supervisory duties, and demand once again that the Social Services Department and the Ministry of Health stop blaming each other and cooperate for the welfare and health of our elderly people!
